The world’s most sweeping digital content law will require 19 social media, search engines and e-commerce services to comply with tough new rules by the end of August this year.

On Tuesday, companies including Apple Inc. ( AAPL ), Amazon.com Inc. ( AMZN ), Meta Platforms Inc. ( META ) and Alphabet Inc. ( GOOG ) Google all had one or more Services are classified as “very large” online platforms or search engines by the European Union’s executive body. The designation also included Bytedance Ltd.’s TikTok and Twitter Inc. The companies have four months left to comply with a raft of regulations in the new Digital Services Act.

The law is the biggest reform of online content in Western countries in more than a generation, reshaping the concept of online responsibility that has been generally applicable since the birth of the Internet.
