Death toll in train collision in Greece rises to 26

The number of victims of a collision between a passenger train and a freight train in  Greece has reached 26, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vatrakoyannis said on the air of the news channel ERT NEWS.

“At least 85 people were injured, they were taken to hospitals,” Vatrakoyannis quoted TASS as saying.

He clarified that 150 firefighters, more than 30 police officers, 40 ambulances are working on the spot.

270 passengers who did not require medical attention were evacuated from the scene of the tragedy and sent to  Thessaloniki .

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

Earlier it was reported that the train followed the route Athens – Thessaloniki.
