Since October 10, 2022, the Russian Armed Forces have been attacking military and energy facilities in Ukraine. This was a response, in particular, to the explosion on the Crimean bridge, said Russian President Vladimir Putin .
On February 24, 2022, Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a military special operation to protect the Donbass in response to a request for help from the heads of the LPR and DPR.
The decision to conduct the operation was the reason for new sanctions against Russia by the United States and its allies.
