Coke increases testosterone levels and testicle size

Experiments with mice

According to a new study, high cola consumption increases testosterone levels and leads to testicle growth.

Lanzhou (China). A 2017 study published in the Nutrition Journal concluded that cola reduces fertility and sperm quality and motility in men . Now scientists at Northwest Minzu University have investigated whether caffeinated and carbonated drinks affect the production of the male sex hormone testosterone and testicle size. According to their publication in the journal Acta Endocrinol, they conducted experiments with male mice.

One group received only water, while the other animals drank varying amounts of Coca-Cola or Pepsi. During the 15-day study phase, the researchers regularly documented the weight and circumference of the testicles and the testosterone levels of the animals.

Bigger testicles from Coca-Cola and Pepsi

The measurements show that the testicles of the mice that drank Coca-Cola and Pepsi grew significantly larger.

“The results show that a high dose of Pepsi or Coca-Cola can promote testicular growth and development.”

In addition, the blood tests showed that the concentrations of serum testosterone increased significantly in the animals from the Coca-Cola and Pepsi groups. According to the authors, this suggests that the two drinks in high doses increase testosterone release in male mice.

“In summary, consumption of Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola may promote testicular development, increase testosterone release, and increase serum EGF levels.”

Coke increases fertility?

The study results thus indicate that testosterone production and testicle size could also increase in males as a result of high Coke consumption. However , a study of 2,554 young men published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2010 shows that the number of sperm cells falls by 30 percent with the daily consumption of one liter of coke. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility in 2017 also found that cola and other fizzy drinks affect hormone levels and ovulation in women.

It is therefore very likely that Coca-Cola and Pepsi do not increase fertility, although their consumption increases testosterone levels and testicle size.
