TikTok negotiates with the United States, the attitude of the Chinese government is key

ByteDance is facing pressure from the United States to merge or divest TikTok’s U.S. operations, while the company also has to worry about the attitude of the Chinese government.

While TikTok is pushing for a deal with U.S. officials over its business, there is an informal force on the table: the Chinese government.

For more than two years, TikTok has been negotiating with the interagency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or Cfius, about how to insulate the platform’s data and operations from the Chinese government.
