Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip could be coming sooner than you thought

Those waiting for Qualcomm's next big thing might not have to wait as long as usual.

According to a new report, flagship phone buyers around the world may not have to wait that long for Qualcomm to announce the chip they will be using.

Qualcomm and its chips power the majority of flagship phones sold around the world and released the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in November 2022. This chip now powers phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 range , but the next iteration could arrive before the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s 12-month anniversary.

A new Leaks Digital Chat Station Weibo post, picked up by NotebookCheck , suggests we could be getting the next big Qualcomm phone sooner than many of us expected. While no details are given as to when the release will actually happen, a fourth quarter release still seems likely. That could mean that we’ll be launching the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in October rather than November.

It’s worth noting that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 itself launched a few weeks earlier than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that launched before it. So it’s possible that Qualcomm has found a release frequency that doesn’t quite take 12 months for a new chip.

When it comes to the performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, expectations are high. An early Geekbench result shows that we can look forward to some decent numbers, at least as far as benchmark results go.

While it’s almost impossible to figure out where a chip will be used months before a chip is announced, we can safely assume that it will be used by the usual suspects. This will certainly include the Galaxy S24 when it hits the market in early 2024.
