Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT ) on Thursday moved forward with previously announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs, including at its Surface, HoloLens and Xbox divisions, according to Bloomberg.
Layoffs at the HoloLens unit that makes augmented- and mixed-reality headsets have sparked debate over whether the unit will produce a third-generation smartglasses alongside planned smartglasses for the U.S. military, Bloomberg said, citing unnamed sources. question.
Microsoft declined to comment on the layoffs, but said it remains committed to the mixed reality space and the current HoloLens 2 release.
Microsoft is one of several tech giants announcing thousands of job cuts in response to the global economic slowdown. The layoffs announced last month are the largest batch of layoffs at Microsoft in more than eight years.
