Meteorites the size of “Chelyabinsk” fall on the territory of Russia about once every 20-50 years. This information was shared with  TASS by the head of the laboratory of meteoritics and cosmochemistry of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry. IN AND. Vernadsky (GEOKHI) RAS Dmitry Badyukov.

On February 15, 2013, a large meteorite entered the earth’s atmosphere and collapsed over the territory of the Chelyabinsk region . The car was named “Chelyabinsk”.

The fall of such meteorites has been documented only twice. We are talking about the meteorites “Sikhote-Alin” and “Sterlitamak”.

On average, they fall on Russia, according to estimates, about once every 20-50 years, Badyukov specified.

In total, five meteorites similar to the Chelyabinsk type fell on the territory of Russia – ordinary chondrites of the LL5 class.

Scientists now have about hundreds of fragments of the Chelyabinsk meteorite with a total mass of about 2-3 kg. Each of them is 10-15 centimeters.

Earlier, residents of the Krasnoyarsk Territory filmed a burning meteorite flying over the region. According to eyewitnesses, they heard loud noises, and some of the people felt the shaking in the houses. The meteorite landed in  Krasnoyarsk .
