South Korea’s Samsung unveils washing machine technology that reduces microplastics by 54%

On January 5, 2023, Samsung Electronics of South Korea unveiled new technologies that lead to sustainable living at the consumer electronics exhibition “CES 2023”. This article introduces washing machines with environmentally conscious technology, power saving and net zero homes with artificial intelligence (AI).
For more than a year, the company has been working with outdoor gear retailer Patagonia to tackle the issue of microplastics emitted during laundry polluting the oceans. As a result, we announced a filter called “Less Microfiber Cycle”.
The Less Microfiber Cycle is unique in that it reduces microplastic emissions by up to 54%. The company calls these types of products “laundry innovations,” and they offer consumers an easy way to reduce emissions that are harmful to the environment.
The product is already on sale in Europe, and will be available in South Korea from February 2023 and soon in the United States. The filter of this product can be purchased separately, and can be attached to washing machines of other companies.
In addition, the company has announced an energy system solution “SmartThings Energy” for various home appliances. It centralizes the management of appliances compatible with the solution, achieving energy savings of up to 15% for refrigerators, up to 20% for air conditioners, and up to 35% for washing machines.
