Nutritional Neuroscience: Cinnamon May Improve Memory and Learning Ability

A group of scientists from the Birjand University of Medical Sciences in Iran conducted a study and found out that cinnamon can have a positive effect on mental abilities and brain function. It is reported in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience .

The researchers conducted a systematic review of 40 studies published in online databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science. Among the 40 studies, 33 were conducted with the study of real living organisms – humans and animals.

Scientists conducted five of them by analyzing cells or post-mortem tissues, and two were clinical trials involving patients, writes Reedus .

As a result, it turned out that the use of cinnamon or its components improves memory and learning ability, as well as reduces anxiety, reduces the aggregation of tau proteins and beta-amyloids, which are responsible for the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

According to research team leader Samane Nahai, cinnamon can also be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of diseases of the brain and nervous system, but more research is still needed.

As noted by the Federal News Agency , cinnamon has many beneficial properties and is a component of the Mediterranean diet. In particular, cinnamon prevents the development of inflammation due to its antioxidant properties.

Dietitian Angelica Duval said that cinnamon is a very useful product that can be compared to a natural antibiotic. In an interview with the Zvezda TV channel, she noted that it is able to inhibit the growth of bacteria and can be used as an antifungal agent. It is also useful for blood vessels, because thrombosis is prevented.
