Sony G’s 2022 third quarter financial results, image sensor business hits record high

”Both net sales and operating income are record highs in this field (Imaging & Sensing Solutions field, I&SS field) as quarterly results” (Sony Group (Sony G) Representative Executive Officer and CFO Hiroki Totoki).

On February 2, 2023, Sony G held a financial results briefing for the third quarter of fiscal 2022 (October 1 to December 31, 2022), and consolidated sales for the same period increased by 13% year-on-year to 3 trillion. 412.9 billion yen, and consolidated operating profit decreased by 36.4 billion yen to 428.7 billion yen ( Fig. 1 ). In particular, operating income is approaching the record-high year-on-year level ( Fig. 2 ). Particularly strong businesses include the G&NS field (games & network services field), the I&SS field, and the music field.

Sales in the G&NS field increased by 53% year-on-year to 1,246.5 billion yen due to increased sales of hardware and the impact of exchange rates. The PS5 hardware sold 7.1 million units in the quarter, and the cumulative sales volume by the end of December exceeded 32 million units. Based on this result, the company has raised its full-year sales target for fiscal 2022 from 18 million units to 19 million units. By optimizing operations, the company will increase hardware supply and reaccelerate business growth. The music segment increased 23% year-on-year to 363.7 billion yen due to an increase in streaming sales.
